Abstract

Between 1914 and 1918, war experiences were not limited to the front. There was also the military occupation, suffered by nearly 10 million French and Belgians. Hunger, anguish, deprivation and lassitude were the conditions of this particular situation where there was a complementarity of gender and antagonism of war: intimate relations were born between women and men who in other circumstances would never have met. But these relationships were not just a revolt of love against hate. The wave of rape that accompanied the invasion of August 1914 contributed to terrorizing the civilian population, and prostitution boomed in the following years. Whatever their nature, these relationships did not make for indifferent occupations: for four years, the female body was the site of incessant tensions in occupied countries. Many were ostracized under the occupation, shaved on liberation, and then disappeared once peace returned. One hundred years after the end of the war, Femmes à Boches is the first book to look into the history of these women.
