Abstract | This article focuses on the daily life of women in rural areas of the north-eastern Polish provinces, setting their experiences against those of the wider civilian population during the First World War. The author draws upon women's diaries and personal documents, which provide eyewitness accounts of women's lives. These sources present a contrast with previous research on the First World War in Poland, which has mainly focused on its military and international aspects. The author argues that the involvement of women in public life and the fight for women's rights, which had begun to develop before 1914, remained largely suspended for the duration of the war as Polish women were totally occupied with their own and their families' survival. |
