Abstract

British officials frowned on fraternization between American servicemen and British women and girls, though they tended to take active measures to discourage such behavior only when it involved African-American soldiers. It was assumed that only working-class women and girls needed to be reprimanded; middle- and upper-class women and girls were presumed to behave acceptably.
