Abstract

This work critically analyzes the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) processes of ex-combatants supported by the current dominant peace-building policies in the international community. These policies promote an intervention in post-conflict contexts based on the liberal principles of representative democracy, free market, pre-eminence of civic-political rights and a particular approach (state, formal, top-down) of the resolution of armed conflicts. In the negotiation, design and development of these DDR processes affect, among other issues, on the one hand, the international gender agenda (related to western liberal feminism) and, on the other hand, the absence of an approach that favors the transformation of the militarized masculinities of ex-combatant men so that their violent and misogynistic behaviors do not reproduce in their civil life in post-conflict contexts. These theoretical reflections are complemented by the study of the DDR processes implemented in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2004 and, especially, their impact on the reproduction of armed conflicts and violence and the promotion of impunity in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, in the east of the country.
