Abstract

This is a  survey of women and gender in early modern Europe. In this study, the author summarizes the latest scholarship regarding topics such as sexuality, masculinity, the impact of colonialism, and women's role as consumers. Other themes investigated include the female lifecycle, literacy, women's economic role, artistic creation, female piety and witchcraft, and the relationship between gender and power. The structure of the study reflects the tripartite division of the self: mind, body, and spirit.  Coverage is geographically broad, including Russia, Scandinavia, the Ottoman Empire, and the Iberian peninsula.
