The Count of Monte Cristo is an adaptation of the Alexander Dumas (1802–70) tale by the same name completed in 1844. The story takes place in France, Italy, and the islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events between 1815 and 1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France (1773–1850). It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile in 1815).

Dantes, a sailor is falsely accused of treason by his best friend Fernand, who wants Dantes' girlfriend Mercedes for himself. Dantes is imprisoned on the island prison of Chateau d'If for 13 years, where he plots revenge against those who betrayed him. With the help of another prisoner, he escapes the island and proceeds to transform himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo as part of his plan to exact revenge. [publisher]
