Abstract

War and Peace was a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), published first serially and then in its entirety in 1869. It describes Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812 from the Russian perspective. This American movie, directed by King Vidor, is an adoption of the novel, which chronicles the French invasion of Russia and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society through the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. The film centers on the complicated love triangle in Tolstoy’s novel between Nasthasha Rostov, Count Pierre Bezukhov and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky.
