Abstract | Between 1981 and 1983, Guatemala's Mayan Ixil people were particularly targeted by a total counter-insurgency war, particularly characterized by systematic and public sexual violence that had a long-term impact on women. This raises questions about the trauma's permanence and about the resilience processes of Mayan Ixil women. Based on a first hand ethnography, this article analyses the victims' trauma, in particular by questioning the testimony effects. Then it deals with the activist commitment as a curative act, viewed in parallel with the structural obstacles to a real, both individual and collective, reconstruction. |
