Abstract

Diary notes of the  German journalist and resistance fighter Ruth Andreas-Friedrich, who fought against the Nazi regime between 1938 and 1945. Her diary reports about  the work of the small resistance group "Onkel Emil" (Uncle Emil) in Berlin during the Second World War. This resistance group was not ideologically but humanitarian motivated and consisted mainly of journalists, doctors and other intellectuals. The group came together in the winter of 1938 around Ruth Andreas-Friedrich and the conductor Leo Borchard. It was named after its warning call. This private network helped persecuted Jews at high personal risk with hiding places, food and papers. It also supported the families of politically persecuted people and distributed "White Rose" leaflets.
