Abstract | Was Germany defeated with the British and French declaration of war on September 3, 1939? Or with the battles for Stalingrad and the Tunisian bridgehead? Or only with the successful Allied landing in northern France and the collapse of Army Group Center in the summer of 1944? By the spring of 1943, the strategic initiative had finally passed from the Axis powers to the anti-Hitler coalition. This volume deals with the aerial warfare over Europe, the war in Western Europe from the Allied invasion to the failed Ardennes offensive and, as an excursus, the war in East Asia up to the Japanese defeat. The authors show the hopeless situation in which the German warfare ended up with Hitler's social Darwinist motto of "all or nothing". This is the seventh volume of a comprehensive eleven-volume history of the Second World War, written from the German perspective. For the entire book series see Germany and the Second World War. |
