Abstract

Around one million war widows lived in the Western occupation zones and the early Federal Republic after World War II. Nevertheless, the situation of these women has hardly been researched so far. Anna Schnädelbach examines for the first time the ways in which the situation and behavior of war widows were discussed in West German society and the personal strategies war widows developed to cope with their situation. She demonstrates that for many of the widows, the possibilities of securing a livelihood through gainful employment were extremely limited.
