Abstract

Media should provide information about wars and conflicts. The extent to which this can succeed, however, depends on the legal, economic, political and cultural framework. Diverse processing, representation, selection and perception patterns shape the media interpretations. The fact that reporting on wars and conflicts is focused on individual events and people, but that there is a lack of background information, has often been criticized.  Researchers from various disciplines have reacted to this problem in recent years and turned to the complex relationships between media and war: Studies deal with the role of the media in war and with representations of war in the media. Questions are asked, for example, about the militarization of the media in different media systems, the potential of the media as 'early warning systems' in the event of conflicts and about the prospects for peace journalism. This edited German volume on Media - War - Gender: Affirmations and Irritations of Social Orders presents results of this international research.
