Abstract

They were students, sons of peasants, workers. Among them were Jews and Communists. Some were born in France, others in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Italy, Spain or Brazil. In 1939, they did not know each other. In 1943, they took up arms together in Toulouse to fight the Nazi occupiers and the Vichy regime. Some because they had fought in the Spanish War and had a score to settle with fascism. The others because they were persecuted. They formed the 35th FTP-MOI brigade (Francs-tireurs partisans de la main-d'oeuvre immigrée) in Toulouse. They risked their lives to liberate the soil of France, their land of asylum. Eighteen of them were arrested by the Vichy police and handed over to the Germans. Two died on the train that was taking them to be deported. Four were shot, Marcel Langer, the founder of their brigade, was guillotined. The others, by a miracle, survived and testified.
