Abstract

Born in dark times, raised in a hail of bombs: an entire German generation was still in their infancy when the Second World War fell upon them. Too young to be involved in the machinations of the Nazi regime, their carefree childhood was robbed from them. For the most part, these men and women kept silent about their experiences between 1939 and 1945, some of which were traumatic. In this book, they have their say: about their experiences in the bomb shelter and the funerals of the dead; about their flight from the East; about a childhood without a father; about the 'Kinderlandverschickung' (evacuation of children to the countryside); about all the experiences that seem unimaginable to us today, but which nevertheless shaped many people who were instrumental in building the Federal Republic. This is a sensitive portrait of a generation that for decades rarely spoke about its fate.
