Abstract

Examining the evolution of understandings of mass rape in wartime, Bos considers how analyses of and legal responses to these incidents have evolved over time, in parallel with chaning ideas in Western society about sexual violence. The legal definition of these acts as war crimes or genocide, therefore, emerged from this discourse in the context of atrocities in the 1990s in Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
