Women at War, 1914-1918

This book by British historian Arthur Marwick was one of the first studies on women during World War I, published in 1977. The focus of the study is Britain. His main thesis is that women were "emancipated" during World War I because they gained access to areas of the economy, society and politics previously only open to men. This has since become highly contested and criticized by women and gender historians, who demonstrated with their later research that many of the opportunities opened to women during the war were quickly taken away again after the conflict ended in 1918.
