Abstract | "What happened after the war was over?" All the drastic changes that the war had brought for women, which were different in every European country, had to be reconsidered at the end of the war. In this edite volume the authors ask about short- and long-term changes in the constructions of gender relations in West and East Germany, Austria, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Greece and Hungary. The contributions analyze the nationally very different discourses on war and gender and ask how women's war and post-war experiences were told and interpreted as part of the female life story and as part of national reconstruction myths. The authors deal with the political work of women, who in many countries were not granted the right to vote until after the Second World War, with the problem of reconstructing "normal" living conditions and with the restoration of communities. This book analyzes the connection between gender constructions and reconstruction after the Second World War from a European perspective and thus puts this period up for discussion anew. |
