Abstract

This book chapter in the 2011 edited German volume Soldatinnen: Gewalt und Geschlecht im Krieg vom Mittelalter bis heute (Female Soldiers: Violence and Gender in War from the Middle Ages to the Present) discusses British women in air defence batteries during World War II. In this conflict the number of British women included in military service peaked at 453,000 in September 1943, which equals 9 percent of the military strenght. A large portion of this women served in air defence batteries, where they de facto were involved in combat, but this fact was concealed to the public by the government, because officially women were not allowed in any combat position.
