Abstract

This book chapter in the 2011 edited German volume Soldatinnen: Gewalt und Geschlecht im Krieg vom Mittelalter bis heute (Female Soldiers: Violence and Gender in War from the Middle Ages to the Present) discusses the position of women in the  Ukrainian Armed Underground of the 1940s and 1950s.  The organization of Ukrainian Armed Underground started with the occupation of the territory by the German Wehrmacht in 1941. More and more mainly young women joined the resistance movement , but because of the dominant  gender stereotypes they were often reduce  by the male fighters to the position of "mere helpers" and nurses and not allowed to join the combat, even if they ante to do so. After the Second World War their war participation was quickly forgotten, the focus in national memory was on the "heroic" male fighters.
