Abstract

The article presents a discussion of the citizen soldier. Within the Western history tradition, men have been asked to set aside their lives and livelihoods to aid their countries through military service. The author explores some of the sociopolitical dynamics of such a military force. He also discusses the problems associated with uprisings and violence when men who have served in the military are sent home to civilian life. A discussion of disenfranchised groups not allowed to serve in combat because of race, sex, or sexual orientation is also presented.
