Abstract | The Sportsmen's Recruiting Day, 27 July 1917, was part of a larger campaign in Australia in which sportsmen were encouraged to join the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) under the banners of the Sportsmen's Battalions and the Sportsmen's 1000. Very little has been written on either of these movements and the first part of this article will be largely devoted to the origins of the battalions, their relationship with comparable movements in Britain, and their contribution to the recruitment of Australian men. The second part will examine the Sportsmen's Battalions and gender identity; in particular, what linked sport, battle, and masculinity in Edwardian Australia? |
