Abstract

This articles provides a history and analysis of the Dutch military barracks in the East Indies. While it does examine the day-to-day living conditions of the soldiers stationed there, it also looks at how the barracks were arranged for locals, particularily women. Ming gives the readers a understanding of the presence of concubines in military barracks and their social standing among the soldiers and other locals.
