Abstract

This chapter in the 1996 edited volume More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas explores the economic roles of the free women of color of Cap-Français. In the French Caribbean, free women of color (femmes de couleur libre) included all black (négresse), mulatto (mulâtresse), quadroon (cuarterón) and other mixed blood. They played an important but so far overlooked role in the economy and society of the French Caribbean.
