Abstract

This chapter in the 1996 edited volume More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas examines the resistance of enslaved women in Antigua between 1632 and 1763. It shows that throughout the Americas slaves carved out more livable spaces for themselves by working to transform privileges allowed by the master class into customary rights and women played an important role in this slave resistance.
