Abstract

How did the mythical leitbild of comradeship shape the pursuit of Nazi war? Comradeship was social cement in primary groups, in male bonding, in imagined communities such as the German military, and in the German nation. Comradeship held together aggression and altruism, equality and authority, masculinity and femininity and thus upheld order in chaos, continuity in discontinuity. Above all, comradeship combined male bonding through criminal means with in-group humanity, thus giving the perpetrators a feeling of being good boys despite participating in mass murder.
