Abstract

The reflection of the war as a factor in musical structural history is often rather excluded in musicology. Behind this is the idea of the »relative autonomy of music history«. A literally decisive event like the First World War, however, lies at odds with the idea of a relatively autonomous self-development of musical history, which more than was good has buried the sense of the contingency of history, the sense of what historians have in an event like that The First World War is indeed also of interest: the unforeseen and unpredictable events and developments, the upheavals, which cannot be understood as "necessary" stages in an overarching process, but rather often had far-reaching consequences because of their unpredictability. This anthology analyzes these relationships.
