Abstract

Few historians have dealt with the women who served the British Army in America during the French and Indian War and the Revolution. Fewer still have been sympathetic in their treatment. In their neglect and their hostility both, they have been reminiscent of the senior officers and civil administratiors who dominated the lives of eighteenth-century Army personnel, male and female. The high command generally showed little interest in the women and tended to be hostile as well. This paper attempts to account for their attitude and analyzes the ways in which the prevailing bias colored the women's lives. Central to the inquiry will be those wommen whose names were included in company rolls — "soldiers' wives" or "army women," in the usage of their time.
