Abstract

This book by Guillemot sheds light on the experiences and views of Vietnamese women during the Vietnam War, an aspect underemphasized in the historiography on the conflict. Divided into two sections, this study first examines experiences of these women in multiple contexts on both sides of the 17th parallel, and then turns its attention to the history of "Youth Shock Troops" or the TNXP, during the Indochina and Vietnam Wars. In particular, it concentrates on the feminization of these troups during the latter war. In each part, Guillemot examines at length the wounds the war inflicted on women's bodies and spirits. It records the violence done to them and the toll it exacted on their bodies and health. The author offers examples from many different narratives, ranging from the memories of civilians and military personnel, women as well as men. He also includes wartime and postwar stories, drawing on press reports and the place of the war in works of fiction.
