Abstract

Since the 1960s, in all of the Portuguese territories of Africa, communist-inspired revolutionary movements which led the armed struggle against the Portuguese empire made women’s liberation a central axis of their anticolonial struggle. Through the evolution of the struggle for national liberation in Mozambique, it appears that the development of a rhetoric advocating for women’s liberation in the liberation movement responded simultaneously to a necessity for the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO) and militant demands, as well as being consistent with the radical socialist ideology which progressively established itself in the movement. The revolutionary socialist dimension of the anticolonial struggle in Mozambique favored the emergence of a discourse advocating for women’s liberation as well as the implementation of social transformations which, despite their limits, were inscribed in conflict with the patriarchal, traditional, and colonial social systems.
