Abstract | In 19 contributions, a group of former Tübingen cultural scientists examine female living environments and forms of female politics before and during the 1848/49 revolution. Although women had no right to vote, they first entered the political stage in 1848/49, took part in popular assemblies, founded women's associations to support the political movement, and fought "with the shopping basket and the needle" for national interests. The staging of the sexes at the flagship of the vigilante shows how women were woven into the web of developing nationalism. The symbolism of the sexes, as represented in speeches, newspaper articles and caricatures, is also analyzed. The successful mixture of scientific analysis with a narrative form of historiography makes this book a treasure trove for readers interested in cultural history. Since there is still no comparable study that shows the cultural construction of the sexes in the 19th century in a similar degree of complexity, the book still marks a milestone in women's and gender research to this day. |
