Abstract | This monograph on the twelve British West India Regiments between 1795-1815, the time of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792 and 1815) and the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) explores these regiments' impact on the social order of the West Indies. Similar to other British colonial troops, mainly the officers and non-comissioned officers and some soldiers were white and British, but many of the ordinary soldiers were colonial subjects, including several former black slaves. This book explains and discusses how they were recruited into the British army in the Caribbean, despite the negative impact of this recruitment on the fight for the abolition of the slave trade and the discontentment of the white colonists in Saint-Domingue, and what effects this had for the British West India Regiments in the time period. |
