This book deals with the rise of fascist mass movements in Italy and Germany before Mussolini and Hitler came to power. For the first time, a systematic comparison of the political practice of Italian Squadrism and the German SA is presented here. In both fascist paramilitary organisations, the exercise of violence served both propagandistic appeal externally and group bonding internally. The extent and form of violent acts are examined, as are the social composition, internal organizational life, and political culture of both combat unions. The book is presented here in a new edition that has been revised and supplemented by an epilogue.
