Abstract

The recruitment of African soldiers by European powers, initially limited in number and more or less voluntarily since the mid-nineteenth century, then in large numbers and with a coercive character since the beginning of the twentieth century, and especially by France before and during the First World War, has deeply penetrated European and African history and has permanently changed the relations between the two continents and their people. In 15 contributions, the volume examines the consequences of this historical meeting of Africans and Europeans on selected issues using texts and visual material from France, Germany, Hungary and the West African countries that were primarily affected. In two interviews, those directly involved, two Senegalese soldiers from the Second World War and the Vietnam War, also have their say. [Publisher]
