Abstract | This classic novel by Hans Jacob Christoph von Grimmelshausen, published first in German in 1670, tells the story of a young woman named Courage, who grew up in a Bohemian town in middle class circles, caught up in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), lost everything, but survives, even prospers, by the use of her native cunning and sexual attraction. She became a camp follower in different armies, got children and came to some wealth, but ends poor and sick. The story is told as an autobiographial narrative. |
