Abstract | One of the best examples of Czech New Wave cinema and Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Closely Watched Trains is a coming-of-age story set in German-occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II. Young Miloš is a guard of a small rail station and is oblivious to the war. Instead, he is obsessed with having his first sexual experience. Despite the favors of train conductor Masa (Jitka Bendová), Milos has no luck. His quest leads him to Hubička, a female Resistance fighter who, in passing, recruits him to the cause. Miloš quest to become a man takes a detour when he must follow through with Hubička's plan to blow up a German ammunition train. |
