Abstract | A Message to Garcia is a 1936 American adventure spy film directed by George Marshall, inspired by the 1899 essay "A Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard, that was loosely based on an incident during the ramp up to the Spanish–American War in 1898. The essay and film frame frames the United States as the liberator of Cuba from colonizer Spain. The film follows Army Lt. Andrew Rowan who, after the attack on the U.S.S. Maine, travels to the island to deliver a personal message from President McKinley to General Calixto Garcia, leader of the Cuban revolt. Rowan finds help among fellow soldiers, the British, and Cubans who escort him safely through the interior to find Garcia. |
