Abstract

In 1939, Guido Orefice a young Jewish man arrives in Arezzo, Tuscany, where his uncle Eliseo works in a restaurant. He falls in love with Dora who is set to be engaged with another man. Dora eventually gives in and marries Guido and the two have a son, Giosuè. In 1944 when Northern Italy is occupied by Nazi Germany, Guido, Giosuè, Eliseo and many other Jews are forced onto a train and taken to a concentration camp. There Guido employs his fertile imagination to shield his son from the horrors of internment and is able to save his life. The film was an overwhelming critical and commercial success, earning three Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor for Roberto Benigni.
