Abstract

In 1969, the author volunteered to work at an American Friends (Quakers) Service Committee hospital in Quang Ngai, a Vietnamese province that saw some of the heaviest fighting and civilian and military casualties of the Vietnam War. This volume describes the horrifying plight of the Vietnamese "boat people" who faced disease, pirate attacks, unsanitary and crowded conditions, and other dangers to escape from Vietnam to Pulau Bi Dong, a tiny, previously uninhabited island in Malaysia, and recounts the author's experience working in the refugee camp in Malaysia.
