Abstract

This volume tells the harrowing story of a young American woman interned by the Japanese Army during the Second World War. Caught in the confusion that followed the fall of Corregidor, her husband away on a business trip, the author found herself and her two young children thrust into a harsh, uncertain existence where finding enough food to eat became a daily test of ingenuity; where the most common forms of human decency and charity became increasingly rare; and where uncertain news from the outside world provided the only moments of hope in a life suddenly bordered by prison fences and the struggle for survival.
