Abstract

Conflicts and debates about religion, morality, and philosophy infuse this film about the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), based upon the 1959 novel of the same title by J. B. Pick. Vogel, a teacher (Omar Sharif) fleeing a gang of mercenaries, stumbles upon an isolated valley in southern Germany untouched by war. Once the mercenaries find him, Vogel convinces their leader (Michael Caine) to leave the war behind and find peace in the valley. Although some mercenaries continue to rape and pillage, the leader banishes them from the valley. Peace thrives until the Catholic priest burns a woman as a heretic, leading Vogel to kill him to restore peace.
