Abstract | Sands of Iwo Jima is a 1949 war film starring John Wayne as Sergeant Stryker. The film follows a group of United States Marines from training to the Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) during which the United States Marine Corps and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army. Sands of Iwo Jima was one of the first Hollywood films to present the Second World War through realism. The dramatization of the iconic and important Pacific Theater battle is interspersed with newsreel footage, and technical advice from and participation of the U.S. Marine Corp also enhance the film's realism. The film, which also features John Agar, Adele Mara and Forrest Tucker, was written by Harry Brown and James Edward Grant, and directed by Allan Dwan. Sands of Iwo Jima was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (John Wayne), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Recording (Daniel J. Bloomberg) and Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. |
