Abstract

Cornelia Norden, born in Berlin in 1943, experienced the usual GDR childhood with pioneer organization and FDJ. At 18, she went to Moscow to study medicine. She practiced in a Soviet provincial hospital that was spared from the Second World War. She married and became the mother of a daughter and a son. While on assignment in Chile, she witnessed the 1973 coup d'état. Norden then worked as a doctor in Cuba, returning to the GDR in the early 1980s and completing her habilitation at the Academy of Sciences. In 1989, she experienced the horror of liquidation and marveled at the growing population of turncoats. She gained completely new experience while working for the pharmaceutical company Schering before the professor ended her professional career in 2008.
