Abstract

Widely considered one of the best films of all time, director Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion explores the common bonds of humanity among World War I officers. The relationships between French prisoners of war and German officers highlights the shared culture among European aristocrats, while class lines separating aristocrats and common men dissipates under shared circumstances. The integration of a bourgeois Jewish prisoner within the group as well as his central role in prisoners' escape counters Europe’s growing anti-Semitism.
