Abstract

Based on the 1944 children's novel of the same name by Esther Forbes, this Walt Disney production highlights the working-class origins of the American Revolution (1775–1783). Johnny Tremain, a silversmith apprentice in Boston, Massachusetts, severely injures his hand while repairing a silver teacup owned by a distant relative. Tremain then becomes a messenger for the Sons of Liberty to relay information about its secret meetings. He and the Sons lead organized protests such as the Boston Tea Party and participate in the early battles of Concord and Lexington in April 1775.
