Abstract

Against the assumption that the liberalization and democratization of modern societies lead to the civilization of human beings and the confinement of civil strife as well as of war, the contributions of this volume are based on the assumption that from the outset bourgeois ideology was characterized by military values. Bourgeois societies, contrary to the belief in progress and theories of modernization, emanated as much military violence as older social formations. The twelve contributions in this volume deal with aspects of this militarization of Western societies in the long nineteenth century from the time of the French Revolution to the First World War. After an introductory look at the German development, they treat the very different militarization processes on the basis of the examples of Great Britain (with side glances at Ireland and Scotland), France, Austria-Hungary, the USA and Switzerland - mostly in an international comparative perspective.
