Abstract

Frank Becker examines in detail the three German Wars of Unification in the bourgeois public, i.e. the war against Denmark 1863/64, against Austria in 1866, and against France in 1870-71. Methodically, Becker looks at the bourgeois interpretative history of the unification wars. The explanations of war in the bourgeois public give an insight into the political culture of the imperial empire. They provide insights not only in current attitudes, but also in the underlying attitudes that shape the perception of the actors. In this way, the aim of the work is to outline the bourgeois national ideology. For the first time, Becker systematically and meticulously examines the enormous abundance of the pamphlets, newspapers, weekly and monthly notes on the unification wars between 1863 and 1871. The methodological advantage of this work, however, is the comprehensive analysis of the sources of the image of the unification wars, which has always attracted attention in the literature, but has never been carried out as systematically as here.
