Abstract | This chapter describes the "persistent presence" of both women and gays as two of the best kept secrets in the military. There have been many attempts to deny the persistent presence of women and gay men and lesbians in the U.S. armed forces. This denial has most often manifested itself in the form of official restrictions ranging from "no access" to "limited access". This chapter compares the history of women's integration into the military to the contemporary debate about allowing gay and lesbian people to serve in the armed forces. |
