Abstract

Military regimes in Latin America have developed patterns of punishment specifically designed for women who are perceived as actively fighting against or in any way resisting the oppression and exploitation visited upon their peoples by dictatorial governments. Punitive sexual enslavement of female political prisoners is found throughout Latin America. In this chapter, the author focuses specifically on the sexual torture of female political prisoners who are or have been citizens of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay and analyzes the nature of this torture, particularly how societal archetypes and stereotypes are manipulated by the torturers.
