Abstract

This book chapter in the edited volume Mothers, Monsters, Whores: Women's Violence in Global Politic explores the series of human rights violations against detainees in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq commited by United States Army and Central Intelligence Agency personnel, which  happened during the early stages of the Iraq War. This human rights violations included physical and sexual abuse, torture, rape, sodomy, and murder. The abuses came to public attention with the publication of photographs of the abuse by CBS News in April 2004. This chapter explores the different dimensions  of the violence an torture at Abu Ghraib and is representation and perception in the public.
