Adelheid

Director František Vláčil creates a claustrophobic, haunting study of identity in post-World War II Czechoslovakia. After returning home from war, a Czech soldier is tasked with managing a large villa previously occupied by a Nazi German family. He falls in love with Adelheid, who now serves as maid in her family's home. Isolated, signified through their language barrier, the post-war politics of Czechoslovakia prompt them to question their identities and sense of belonging.
